Killer Blog Based Business Model #1 – Bankaholic.com

by Patrick Gavin on October 1, 2008

Site: www.Bankaholic.com

Deal: Bankaholic.com sold to BankRate.com

Size of Deal: $15M

Staff: 1

Sources of Revenue: Adsense, BankRate Partner Program

Sources of Traffic: Organic search.

Source: PaidContent

My Commentary: I was looking at this deal and was thinking if this isn’t the highest price tag paid for a single WordPress blog than it must be the most profitable WP blog ever sold! A deal estimated at $15M, seemingly all organic search traffic (so no cost for the traffic, the site is highly ranked for many top banking terms, ie “CD Rates“), and one employee! Well done John Wu.

It is really that the blog price is 15 M?? I don’t think so..

So I discovered this link through problogger.net Short post buddy yet informative. OMG $15 is so big. How I wish my blog would cost the same. Definitely it is the most expensive wordpress blog ever sold.

HAHA, maybe I can win a Guinness world record for this? That would be sweet!

Thanks for the coverage, Patrick.

Bankaholic is a perfect example of why optimizing your site/blog for search engines can make a world of difference.

Ranking number 1 for terms like CD’s as Patrick points out is easily worth a few million to any profit driven company.

That is like crazy.. but amazing at the same time.. but then again the owner of the blog has sold it for $15million and that is for life.. he no longer owns it..

Alex 12.03.08 at 10:57 am

Whoa!! I read this last week and then looked into blogging. I never thought it was a profitable income generating business but guess I learned something new! Anyway, I started my own blog this week as an “experiment”…now…for that money making idea…hmm…

What I like most about this story is that a Blog can be well constructed, well written, and monetized by an individual who is not part of the Corporate Ladder Climbers Association. John Wu or is it JohnS Wu deserves this payday a whole lot more than the John Thain’s of the world. Congratulations are certainly in order, now we can all sit back and watch as every plagiarizing wanna be starts a Banking Blog. I had a visiting professor tell our class once “Money follows Value”; and in this case that is certainly true.

Hey Patrick, hows it going. Yhea I saw this somewhere else as well, but when you think about it, this Blog in the long term can bring a ton of money to this bank. I mean if I was a bank, I would rather people read stuff online, and search for services similar to the ones that I offer… ONLINE… and get business that way, then to have my employess beg everyone that walks in a branch if they want this or that. :)
